A bed on the beach?

There’s nothing quite like falling asleep to the sound of waves (especially if those waves are washing the shores of Marche, Tuscany, Campagna, Puglia, Sicily or Sardinia!), which is why we’ve put together this selection of seven super hotels where you’ll be able to do just that.

Hotel Il Pellicano – Porto Ercole

In Porto Ercole, on the breathtakingly beautiful Argentario peninsula, Hotel Il Pellicano is one of the most glamorous seaside resorts on the whole of the Tuscan coast.

The hotel, comprised of six villas set in gorgeous cliff edge gardens, was the luxurious love nest of British aviator Michael Graham and his American girlfriend Patsy Daszel, and dates back to 1965.

Transformed into a hotel by Roberto Sciò, the property has been continuously upgraded over the years and, in addition to 50 fantastic rooms and suites, now boasts two restaurants, one of which has been awarded 2 Michelin stars; a wine cellar with over 700 labels; a state of the art gym; a wellness center which uses spa products by Florence’s famous Antica Farmacia Santa Maria Novella; a heated sea water swimming pool and, last but not least, a private terrace beach with, of course, a lift to reach it!

Hotel Excelsior – Pesaro

Excelsior Pesaro

The epitome of casual coastal chic, Hotel Excelsior Pesaro sports bright and breezy bedrooms and suites, a top-notch restaurant (serving fabulous fresh fish) and a spa where you can watch the waves roll on to the beach as you indulge in a little professional pampering

The hotel’s beach, home to a 1950’s-inspired lido complete with restaurant, bar and baby corner is, needless to say, a major attraction.

The perfect place to relax and soak up the sun during the day, in the evening Hotel Excelsior’s lido provides a stylish outdoor venue for glamorous get-togethers, talk-of-the-town beach parties and waterfront wedding receptions.

Palazzo Belmonte – Castellabate

Belmonte beach

If you like the idea of staying in a palace by the sea, you’re going to love Palazzo Belmonte! Descendents of the Prince of Belmonte, the 17th century aristocrat for whom this sea edge hunting lodge was built, still live in a wing of this stunning period property, which has only recently been transformed into luxury resort.

Palazzo Belmonte is located on the outskirts of picture-perfect Castellabate, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1998

Tip-toe across the resort’s luxuriant gardens, abundant in colorful bougainvillea and hibiscus, and you’ll quickly reach the property’s private beach and the landing wharf from where to board a boat and sail to the nearby island of Licosa.

Relais Blu – Massa Lubrense

Relais Blu

With gob-smackingly gorgeous views of the bays of Naples and Salerno and the island of Capri from almost every corner of every room, this Mediterranean boutique hotel is the kind of stuff dream holidays are made of…

Filled with the light pouring in through massive floor to ceiling windows, Relais Blu’s cool and contemporary “special rooms” measure a whopping 40 to 60sqm and are equipped with a full range of handy hi-tech gadgets, from personal computers to Wi-Fi and Jacuzzi baths. Oh and, in case you were wondering,  they have terraces with views to die for too!

And the beach? Relais Blu’s Sassi Nerano beach club, in Marina del Cantone, is just a short and incredibly scenic car ride away!

San Domenico Mare – Savelletri di Fasano

san domenico mare

If it’s exclusivity you’re after, this is the place for you: San Domenico Mare provides gorgeous accommodation in just four suites, created in a 17th century watch tower between Savelletri and Torre Canne, in Puglia’s sunny Salento region.

Facilities available to guests include a beach bar, serving champagne, caviar and vodka, the waterfront La Nassa restaurant and the 18 hole San Domenico golf course – arguably the most panoramic place to play in Puglia.

Want something similarly luxurious but just a little bit bigger? Book into San Domenico Mare’s 5 star sister hotel – the highly-acclaimed Masseria San Domenico

Villa Sant Andrea – Taormina Mazzarò

san andrea

The ultimate in Sicilian seaside sumptuousness, Villa Sant Andrea dominates Taormina’s beautiful Bay of Mazzarò.

With 60 bedrooms and suites, it may be bigger than your average boutique hotel, but this iconic property (Villa Sant Andrea welcomed its first guests back in the 1950’s) still looks and feels very much like a private home.

High-ceilinged rooms embellished with period artworks and antiques, flower-festooned terraces facing the hotel’s gardens and private beach, a gourmet restaurant with views of the bay and beyond as far as the Calabrian coast, and a wellness center offering, amongst other things, relaxing massages performed outdoors, under the sea-edge gazebo….

Lanthia Resort – Santa Maria Navarrese

spiaggia lanthia

Super-cool contemporary interiors, a groovy gourmet restaurant, a stylish lounge bar, an irresistible infinity pool and, on the other side of the wood, your very own private beach: Lanthia Resort has everything today’s design-conscious, luxury-loving traveller could possibly want.

And there’s more: nestled between the glorious green mountains of Ogliastra and the brilliant blue sea of Santa Maria Navarrese, Lanthia Resort provides the perfect base from where to explore both inland and coastal Sardinia.
